An international Bibliography of German Literature and Literary Studies
History
Originally limited to literary studies, the BDSL was first published in 1957 by Vittorio Klostermann Verlag, initiated and edited by the then Frankfurt library director, Hanns W. Eppelsheimer. His successor, Clemens Köttelwesch, took over the bibliographical duties a year later and finally expanded the cataloging to include German linguistics in 1969. The BDSL is still known as "Eppelsheimer-Köttelwesch" by the names of its two first editors.

Distortion
The BDSL is compiled by the editorial team primarily through autopsy. On average, more than 12,000 title entries from monographs, anthologies and specialist journals are recorded each year.
Special attention is paid to so-called grey literature, i.e. literature that is not available in bookshops, such as yearbooks and series of publications by literary societies and professional associations, as well as privately printed works. Reviews of research literature, and since 2012, e-only articles and reviews have also been included.
Publication types and source of supply
The print edition of the BDSL is published annually; the editorial deadline is December 31st. Since 1990 (Volume XXX), the BDSL has been computerized, which has made it easier to compile a long-desired collection. With the help of DFG funding, the retro-digitization of the volumes 1985-1989 and their online provision were realized.
In spring 2004, the BDSL finally went online ( www.bdsl-online.de ). The CD-ROM version was discontinued, but the print edition was retained. The reporting years 1985-2014 are currently freely accessible online; research access to the complete database is offered by the publisher Vittorio Klostermann for a fee. A subscription to the book edition can be inexpensively combined with the license fee for BDSL Online. Consortia receive a discount for the online edition. Please send your order directly to the publisher .
