BibLive uses Wi-Fi usage data to display the current occupancy of study and workstations across six locations of Frankfurt University Library. To do this, the number of devices (smartphones, laptops, tablets) logged into the Wi-Fi access points is recorded every five minutes, and the number of currently occupied spaces is estimated using a machine learning algorithm. To ensure the figures are as accurate as possible, the digitally transmitted data is cross-checked with manual counts carried out by staff at irregular intervals.
Private policy
The data collected does not relate to individual devices, but solely to the total number of devices at each location. It is not possible to deduce either the location of a device or the identity of the user from this data.
