Registration and Library Card

Library Card for...

  • Members of Goethe University usually possess a Goethe Card, which also serves as a library card. The Goethe Card is issued by the University Computing Centre (HRZ) of Goethe University. Therefore, most questions regarding your Goethe Card should be directed to HRZ.

  • For questions about the library function of the Goethe Card, please contact by mail or call us.
  • The Goethe Card is only valid for the duration of your membership at Goethe University.
  • For logging into your library account, please use your HRZ login.
  • For ordering, renewing, or reserving, please use the card number under your name on the Goethe Card and your library password (by default, your six-digit birthdate in the format DDMMYY - without spaces or dots).

  • Non-members of Goethe University (e.g. members of other institutions) can apply for a personal library card online and then collect it at the Information Desk of the Central Library .
    The issuance of the library card is free of charge.
  • A library card can be obtained by anyone who can prove a residence in the Federal Republic of Germany for at least 3 months with official documents and is older than 16 years. Individuals under 18 years old require written consent.
  • The following documents (original or copy) must be presented for account activation:
    • Personal ID
    • or EU ID card and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • or passport and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • or residence permit ("Aufenthaltstitel", valid for at least 3 more months)
    • If you are studying at another university, additionally provide the current student certificate/semester ticket
    • If you are under 18 years old, you also need a written consent form from your legal guardian along with their ID card or passport

  • The library card has a limited validity period. After expiration, user data must be reverified. Please present the documents required for activation again.
  • With the library card:
    • You can borrow books at all locations of the university library.
    • You can access the electronic at all locations of the university library.
    • You have internet access on the library computers.
    • You can copy, print, and scan if you load money onto your library card.
    • You can use the lockers at various locations within the library system.

  • Temporarily present guests of the university (e.g. participants of the Summer School) can receive a temporary guest library card. To obtain a guest card, you need:
    • A document (invitation letter or confirmation of participation) from an institution of Goethe University indicating the duration of your stay
    • A personal document (ID card or passport)

  • Please apply for the guest library card online before collecting it from the Central Library Information Desk.
  • With the guest card:
    • You can use all books and materials on-site in the library spaces. Borrowing is not possible with the guest card.
    • You can access electronic resources of the university library on campus.
    • You have internet access on library computers.
    • You can copy, print, and scan by loading money onto the card.
    • You can use lockers at various locations within the library system.

  • Institute cards can be requested by responsible parties for Goethe University work groups, projects, or third-party projects, as well as by external institutions and companies intending for multiple individuals to borrow using a single library card.
  • The application is to be made using this form
  • The applying person bears responsibility for all borrowed and ordered media, as well as for the card itself.
  • Please inform the university library about all changes, such as changes in responsibility or new contact details.
  • Attention: The institutional library card does not grant access to electronic resources.
  • The card issuance takes 1-2 working days. You will be notified when the card can be collected.

Additional Information

  • Someone else can collect the library card on your behalf with authorization .
    The authorized person must provide an official photo ID.
  • From the person who applied for the library card, the following documents (original or copy) must be submitted either upon collection or in advance via email:
    • Personal ID
    • or EU ID card and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • or passport and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • Residence permit ("Aufenthaltstitel", valid for at least 3 more months)
    • If you are studying at another university, additionally provide the current student certificate/semester ticket
    • If you are under 18 years old, you also need a written consent form from your legal guardian along with their ID card or passport

  • You can activate your library account in advance and receive the card number before receiving the physical library card. For example, you can use this to order materials in advance. However, you can only collect the library card in person.
  • To do this, send photos/scans of the following documents via email:
    • Personal ID
    • or EU ID card and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • or passport and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • Residence permit ("Aufenthaltstitel", valid for at least 3 more months)
    • If you are studying at another university, additionally provide the current student certificate/semester ticket
    • If you are under 18 years old, you also need a written consent form from your legal guardian along with their ID card or passport
  • Alternatively, instead of sending the required documents via email, you can also present them to us during a video chat at our virtual counter through your webcam.

  • Login for Goethe University Members:
    • Members of Goethe University have two access options:
      1. HRZ account: This is used to log into your library account and to use library computers.
      2. Library account: This consists of the full bolded number on the Goethe Card (username) and the library password. The library password is preset by HRZ and is your 6-digit birthdate (DDMMYY). You can change the library password anytime in your library account. The library account is used to order, reserve, or extend media loans, and you can use it to log into the hebis portal for interlibrary loan requests.

  • Login for Non-Members of Goethe University:
    • Non-members of the university need their library card number (username) and the library password they set during library card registration.
      With these credentials, you can use all library services (log into library account, order, extend, reserve media).
      You can also log into library computers. However, please note that these computers are designated for non-members of Goethe University (indicated by a red sign at the bottom of the screen).

  • Don′t remember your library password? You can request a new password or have it reset:

  • You can change your library password anytime.
    In the search portal: Your Account > Settings > Change Password
  • It may take up to 15 minutes for the new password to become active!

  • Extension is possible at the Information Desk of the Central Library by presenting the following documents (original or copy):
    • Personal ID
    • or EU ID card and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • or passport and official registration certificate ("Meldebescheinigung", max. 2 years old)
    • Residence permit ("Aufenthaltstitel", valid for at least 3 more months)
    • If you are studying at another university, additionally provide the current student certificate/semester ticket
    • If you are under 18 years old, you also need a written consent form from your legal guardian along with their ID card or passport

  • You can also extend the card online. Please send a photo/scan of the aforementioned documents (both sides for ID card) via email.
  • Alternatively, instead of sending the required documents via email, you can also present them to us during a video chat at our virtual counter through your webcam.

  • A fee of € 20.00 is charged for a replacement card in case of loss.
