Publishing in Open Access journals - additional agreements with publishers

The Open Access Fund will fund articles in a large number of Open Access Journals as long as funds are available and the funding requirements are met. Additional agreements with some publishers offer discounts on the publication fee (APC) and/or central payment. At present, there are additional agreements with the following publishers or journals:

Gold OA journals

Publication in Gold OA journals by ACM is free for Goethe University members.

Hybrid journals

Articles in Hybrid journals and Proceedings are published Open Access at no additional cost to the authors.

Gold OA journals

The current funding requirements for the Open Access publication fund apply.

Hybrid journals

Most of AIP′s conventional journals offer authors the option of making their articles open access for a fee. This option is free of charge for a certain number of articles by members of Goethe University. As only a limited number of articles are available, the option may not be available towards the end of the calendar year. If the quota is used up, there will be no automatic Open Access publication.

Gold OA journals

The OA publication fund covers up to 1,800 EUR (net) of publication fees pro rata.

🔓       On the publisher′s homepage , OA journals are marked with a blue padlock symbol. Please have invoices from BMJ issued in British pounds (GBP) (this is the default setting for the currency), as BMJ uses a very unfavourable internal euro exchange rate.

Hybrid journals

Articles in hybrid journals from BMJ Publishing are published Open Access at no additional cost to the authors. An important prerequisite here is that the submitting corresponding author is clearly affiliated with Goethe University and states this affiliation both when submitting and in the article itself.

Please contact the OA team at the University Library so that we can check for you whether your proposed article is covered by this agreement.

The journal eLife has changed its publication model in 2023: The focus is on an innovative and transparent peer review process of preprints („post-publication peer review“). If eLife accepts a preprint for peer review, the reviews are publicly published alongside the preprint. The authors can then decide for themselves whether their reviewed preprint will be presented in a final version on the eLife platform as a traditional journal article (version of record). As part of this change, eLife has reduced the publication fee to 2,000 US dollars. The Open Access Publication Fund will cover this publication fee in full.

An important prerequisite here is that the submitting or corresponding author is clearly affiliated with Goethe University and states this affiliation both when submitting and in the article itself.

Please note that costs can only be covered upon application. If possible, please apply for funding before submitting the manuscript using this form:
