Provision of literature at the Frankfurt University Library (UB)

The (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal) can be used to search the holdings of Frankfurt University Library and access all databases and electronic texts available on the university network.


Requesting

The majority of the media in the Central Library (ZB) must be ordered online, all other items are available in the open stacks at the various locations of the University Library. Here you can take your desired item from the shelf yourself to borrow it. In some cases, the departmental libraries also have small quantities of media in stacks, which must also be ordered online in advance. The collection point for the order is always the respective departmental library.

Please note that some of the University Library′s holdings can only be used in the reading room or on site. This is usually labelled ’only for the reading room‘ in the (Frankfurt) library catalog. Only reading room counters can be selected here.

All media and other materials that you can find in the (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal)can be ordered online.
There are three steps to ordering (screenshot of order form):

  1. Click on the desired title, scroll down, then click on Order
  2. Select pick-up location / target counter
  3. Enter library card number and password
For media that you cannot find in the (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal), please use the interlibrary loan service or the document delivery service Subito.

It is not possible to order online:
  • Media and journals from the reference libraries and reference stacks in the reading rooms
  • Media from the open stacks of the departmental libraries
If your Goethe-Card/library card is blocked (e.g. due to overdue fines), it is not possible to order online.

Requested media are ususally available the next business day picked up within a period of seven calendar days.

Ordering media from the Central Library:

The delivery time for orders to the Medical Library (MedHB) and the Library of Natural Sciences (BNat) is approx. 2 working days. You will be notified by e-mail as soon as your ordered item has arrived.

It may take a little longer for journals and items stored in external stacks to be made available.

Orders for stacks from the departmental libraries can only be collected from the respective departmental library.

Stacks order Library of Law and Economics (BRuW)

Orders are processed Monday to Friday and are available for one week for collection or on-site use at the counter.

The following time periods apply for processing and provision:

  • Orders until 10.00 am are ready from 11.00 am
  • Orders placed by 2.00 pm are ready from 3.00 pm

Stacks order Library of Social Sciences and Psychology (BSP)

Orders are processed within 3 hours from Monday to Friday and are available on the collection shelf for one week.

Stacks order Library of Linguistics and Cultural Studies (BSKW)

Orders are processed Monday to Friday and are available for one week for collection or on-site use at the counter.

The following time periods apply for processing and provision:

  • Orders placed by 09.00 a.m. are ready from 10.30 a.m.
  • Orders placed by 2.00 pm are available from 2.30 pm
  • Orders placed after 2.00 pm are available from 10.30 am on the next working day

You can see the status of your orders in your account under ‘Orders and reservations’. This will change from ‘ordered’ to ‘ready for collection’ as soon as your orders are ready for collection. You can also see the pick-up location there.

Yes, the person requires a current authorisation for this. The completed authorisation form, an official photo ID of the person collecting the book and the library card/Goethe-Card of the person ordering the book must be presented when collecting the book.
This authorisation is also required for:

  • reserved media
  • Media from the open access collection that are not to be borrowed on the person's own card
  • Interlibrary loan requests

You can also order media and journals from the Central Library for use in the reading room without a library card. You will need the exact bibliographic details from the (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal).

Please bring your identity card/passport or another form of photo ID with you to use the media you have ordered.

Loaning

To borrow media from the library locations, you need the Goethe Card or a library card from the University Library. The conditions of use for the Goethe University library system apply. The media can be borrowed either at the circulation desks or at the self-service check-out desks of the libraries.

If your Goethe-Card/library card is blocked (e.g. due to overdue fines), it is not possible to order online.

The media can be borrowed from the self-issue machine during the opening hours of the respective library or during the opening hours of the circulation desks.

The self-issue machine are usually located in the entrance area of the departmental library. There you can borrow media from the respective departmental library yourself. You will find self-issue machine at the following locations:

Conditions of use

You need a valid Goethe-Card or a valid library card to borrow items at the self-service checkout.
The conditions of use for the library system of Goethe University apply.

Please note that the loan periods and the following regulations also apply at the self-checkout desk:
Reference collections, media older than 100 years as well as media from semester collections and journal issues/journal volumes cannot be borrowed.

What can you borrow personally?

At the self-issue machine you can only borrow media from the respective departmental library.

What doesn‘t work with the self-service checkout?

  • Payment of reminder fees
  • Returning media from another library location
  • there are special materials that cannot be borrowed via the self-checkout system

Loan periods

Media can usually be borrowed for 28 days. In many cases it is possible to renew the loan period online.
Media that are available in the reading room can be viewed for 28 days.

However, there are some special cases:

Short-time loan

The short-time loan period is 2 days. It is possible to renew items online up to 5 times.

Institute loan

Media can be borrowed for 180 days with a library card. Renewals are not possible online.

Semester loan - Library of Natural Sciences (BNat)

Certain textbooks an be borrowed by Goethe University students for the whole semester. A booking as a semester loan is only possible at the circulation desk: Mon - Fri 8.00 am - 6.00 pm. Renewals are not possible for semester loans.

Interlibrary loans

The loan period for interlibrary loans is based on the lending library′s specifications, usually four weeks. An renewal of the loan period must be requested in good time. further information

Media that cannot be borrowed are usually labelled as reference holdings in the (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal). They are also not available for loan:

  • Media that are more than 100 years old or particularly valuable
  • Media from the semester and reference collections
  • Media that are labelled accordingly as ‘not available for loan’
  • Individual journal issues and possibly journal volumes
  • Loose-leaf collections


The return date is displayed in your user account. When borrowing items, you can receive a return slip with the return date. You can choose whether you also want to receive receipts by e-mail. Settings for sending library receipts by e-mail

You will receive a reminder email before the loan period expires so that you can return the borrowed media on time and free of charge or, if necessary, renew the loan period.
Even if you do not receive a reminder e-mail, you are still obliged to comply with the loan period.

All loans are automatically reminded when the loan period expires.p>

You can choose whether you also want to receive vouchers by e-mail.

Renewing

Standard loan:     5 times for 28 days each
Short loan:        5 times for 2 days

The loan period is counted again from the day of renewal. If items have already been renewed online 5 times and have not been reserved, they can be returned to the counters or self-checkouts and borrowed again.

You can renew the loan period via your account in the library catalog.
Select individual or all loans and then click on »renew loan period«.

Please note that the new loan period counts from the time you enter. Finally, check all loan periods again.

An renewal is not possible:

  • for media from the textbook collections
  • if the loan period has already expired
  • if the medium is reserved
  • if the item has already been renewed 5 times
  • if your user account has been blocked

An renewal of the loan period must be applied for in good time.

Please note that processing may take a few days, as the library of origin usually has to be contacted. If the library of origin does not agree, it is unfortunately not possible to renew the loan period. Please check the loan period in your library account.

An renewal is not possible via the user account, but only via the respective counter.

Please contact the counter staff for an renewal on site, by telephone or by e-mail. A renewal is only possible within the 28-day period if the item has not been reserved. After the provision period has expired, the medium must be ordered again.

Reservation

Media borrowed by other people can usually be reserved. Exception: holdings from textbook collections. You will be notified by e-mail to the e-mail address stored in your user account when the item is available. Media from the departmental libraries are available for you at the respective library locations. You can also collect reserved media from the Central Library at other locations.

Returning

Borrowed media can be returned at the self-checkout/return machines during the opening hours of the respective library or during the opening hours of the circulation desks.

What can I check out myself?

You can only return media from the respective departmental library at the self-checkout/return machines.

Which items can be checked out personally?

Please return damaged media to the counters personally.

If necessary, you can also return the media to the library by mail. Please take into account the delivery times of the parcel delivery service for the timely return. Returning items by mail is at your own risk.

Media made available in the reading room will be cleared from your user account by the staff after the due date.

Fines

Reminder fees are always incurred if the loan period for the media is exceeded. The fees are due when the reminder is issued, regardless of when the reminder reaches you by e-mail or post.
The amount of the reminder fees is based on the cost regulations and amounts to:

1st reminder:         3.00 €
2nd reminder:    a further 3.00 €
3rd reminder:    a further 6.00 €

The interval between the 1st and 2nd reminder and between the 2nd and 3rd reminder is 14 days in each case.

Your library account will be blocked if overdue fines exceed 12 EUR. Loans, loan period renewals and reservations are then no longer possible.

Overdue fines can be paid in cash during the opening hours of the circulation desks.

A pay station is available at the Humanities Library Center (Q 6, 3rd floor). Please use your charged Goethe Card/library card.
The payment machine is accessible during the opening hoursof the Humanities Library.

Is it possible to pay via bank transfer?
If you are unable to pay the fees on site, you can transfer your reminder fees to the following account.

  • The entire card number
  • Reminder date (see reminder e-mail)
Please note it can take up to 2-3 weeks until your receipt of payment will be confirmed by the Goethe University administration. Any necessary activation of your account is only possible after confirmation of receipt of payment.
It is therefore time-saving for you to pay the money in cash on site. You can do this at the following locations: Service-Monitor

In the event of a system failure of the (Frankfurt) library catalog (Frankfurter Suchportal), the user account can be accessed via the online catalogue (OPAC) if necessary.
