Reading rooms in the Central Library

study spaces in the reading rooms

The central library offers more than 500 study spaces distributed over four floors with sockets available at most of them. Standing desk attachments and sitting balls are at your disposal.The ground and first floor are reserved for silent study. The second floor serves as a group study room.

You can bring and work with your own study materials. In addition, reference collections, e.g. reading room collections, closed stack holdings or microforms can also be viewed here. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the entire library area.How to find and use this service, please click here.

Library users planning on taking exams or preparing for graduation at the GU may apply for carrels. These arfe available on the ground floor as well as the first and second floors. Registration is required due to high demand.

There are copy machines on every floor.

Please note: food and beverges of any sort except water in sealable bottles is prohibited in all reaqding rooms. You are permitted to enter the reading rooms with your personal apparel and bags.

The reading room on the 3rd floor contains special collections with valuable holdings. The study spaces here must be reserved in advance and special terms of use apply.

Equipment and holdings

Reading Room Ground Floor and Mezzanine (ZGE)

  • individual study spaces
  • PC study spaces
  • Reference collections concerning humanities, book sciences, law and economics
  • Lockers (with charge function, e.g. for laptops)

Reading Room 1st Floor and Mezzanine (ZG1)

  • information desk and pick up service of reading room collections
  • individual study spaces
  • PC study spaces
  • The gallery holds a selection of national and international dailies. You can find an overview here.
    The shelves in the reading room area hold a wide array of periodicals from 2023 onward.
  • Readers/scanners for microfilm and microfiche with free scanning capability on a personal USB stick. Historical collection items ordered for the reading room can be viewed under supervision. Both the microfilm scanner and the historical collection workspace can be reserved via the workspace booking system.

Reading Room 2nd Floor and Mezzanine (ZG2)

  • group study spaces
  • Reference books (HB) and journal issues from 1981 onward on the natural science subjects
  • sofas for relaxing

3rd floor reading rooms
